Who We Are

The Siege Group was formed in 1988, when a group of English Civil War re-enactors sought to bring a new dimension and authenticity to the portrayal of 17th century life, by role-play portraying actual characters and events in local history wherever possible.

We are not only soldiers, but civilians too. The roles range from peasants to nobility, traders to maids. Even odd peddler may occasionally be found.

17th Century LutenistWe recruit new members from visitors who have an interest in this period of our history. The whole family can take part, from babes in arms to grannies and granddads. All we ask is that costume and equipment be as authentic as possible to the mid 1600's, but don't worry if you don't have 17th century clothes in your wardrobe: we can lend you some while you try us out!

Browse through these pages to find out more, see our Events page for forthcoming events and then make a point of visiting us on those dates for a real step back in history.

Aims of The Siege Group

The aims of the Group's re-enactments are threefold:

  • To educate the public by bringing to life various aspects of seventeenth century life
  • To raise money for good causes, and
  • To give enjoyment to its members and the public at each event.

As we are a small group, we can generally be found at small castles and manor houses around the country. See our Events page for the places we are performing and where you may see us.

Each venue has its own local history so no two events are exactly the same.

A cannon being firedWhere we can, we put on a siege with musketeers, pikemen and various types of weaponry including cannon and siege-ladders but we tailor our display to suit each venue.

The soldiers' camp then becomes a garrison. The domestic chores and drill with authentic weapons can be seen, while the non-combatant members go about their lives as they would have in that period. Thus, a historic house becomes a home with the chatter of real people in costume, maybe demonstrating their handicrafts. But beware, we will try to involve you too!
