The Civil War

The English Civil War was a defining period in the history of the country. It arguably set the scene for the form of parliamentary rule which we take for granted today.

A Civil War soldier in uniformAnd yet, how many people these days really know what happened back in the seventeenth century? Very few, and even fewer have any understanding of the far-reaching consequences of the events.

These pages attempt to give an overview of the events leading up to the war, the hostilities themselves and finally the aftermath of the war.

They are not, of course, a comprehensive account. That would run to many pages. Those who wish to undertake a more in depth study of the events will find many books in their local library or bookshop, and many other websites giving detail of various aspects of the war.
