Tribute to Darren Lambert (1968-2001)

Darren joined the Siege Group in 1998 and took a part in the portrayal of the hunt for Charles II at Boscobel House.

He was very interested in all aspects of life in the 17th century and shared his extensive knowledge with his friends and the visiting public alike. At most of the Siege Group's events he adopted a position near to the pike-rack, and would keep them greased and shiny until he had gained the public's interest. Then he would describe, in detail, the history and purpose of all the weapons and armour around him. His words were captivating not only to the visitors, but also those to colleagues who happened to be nearby.

Darren loved the outdoors and conservation of the countryside as much as preserving our rich historical heritage.Darren2.jpg (9812 bytes)

A student at Sheffield, he had a thirst for research and besides all his studies, Darren still kindly managed to write articles for The Siege Group, describing the games and pastimes popular in the 17th century.

These first appeared in the group's newsletter "The Culverin" and have been included on this web-site so everyone may learn about these activities and keep them alive for future generations.

It would be a remarkable achievement to have some long-forgotten English game or pastime still being played in some distant part of the world, simply because someone read Darren's words about it here, on this web-site, and began practicing it from his description.

Darren taught us many things in the time he spent with us and we would like to believe that, in this way, he still does.

"My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer", the boy told the alchemist one night as they looked up at the moonless sky. "Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams." Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

"Farewell my Friends"

It was beautiful as long as it lasted, the journey of my life. I have no pain whatsoever, save the pain I'll leave behind. Those dear hearts who love and care, and the strings pulling at the heart and soul. The strong arms that held me up when my own strength let me down.

Farewell, farewell my friends. At every turning of my life I came across good friends. Friends who stood by me, even when the time raced me by.

I smile and bid you goodbye. No, shed no tears for I need them not. All I need is your smile.

If you feel sad, do think of me. For that's what I'll like. When you're liked in the hearts of those you love. Remember then you never die. Rabindranath Tagore
